Karaṇīyamatthakusalena,
yantaṃ santaṃ padaṃ abhisamecca:
sakko ujū ca suhujū ca,
suvaco cassa mudu anatimānī.

This is what should be done by one skilled in the good
who wants to reach the state of peace:
be capable, upright, truly straight,
easy to speak to, gentle, and not proud;

Santussako ca subharo ca,
appakicco ca sallahukavutti,
santindriyo ca nipako ca,
appagabbho kulesvananugiddho.

content, and easy to support,
with few duties, living lightly,
senses calmed, discerning,
modest, not grasping after families.

Na ca khuddamācare kiñci,
yena viññū pare upavadeyyuṃ.
Sukhino vā khemino hontu,
sabbe sattā bhavantu sukhitattā.

Do nothing, however small,
that the wise would find fault with.
May all be happy and secure;
may all beings be happy at heart.

Ye keci pāṇabhūtatthi,
tasā vā thāvarā vanavasesā,
dīghā vā ye va mahantā,
majjhimā rassakā aṇukathūlā,

Whatever living beings there may be,
the frail or the firm, without exception,
the long or the great,
the middling, the short, the fine or the coarse,

diṭṭhā vā ye va adiṭṭhā,
ye va dūre vasanti avidūre,
bhūtā va sambhavesī va —
sabbe sattā bhavantu sukhitattā.

the seen and the unseen,
those who live far off and those near,
those who are born and those yet to be born —
may all beings be happy at heart.

Na paro paraṃ nikubbetha,
nātimaññetha katthaci na kañci;
byārosanā paṭighasaññā
nāññamaññassa dukkhamiccheyya.

Let no one deceive another,
nor despise anyone anywhere;
let no one, out of anger or ill will,
wish suffering on another.

Mātā yathā niyaṃ puttaṃ
āyusā ekaputtamanurakkhe,
evampi sabbabhūtesu
mānasaṃ bhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ.

As a mother would guard with her life
her child, her only child,
so toward all beings
one should cultivate a boundless heart.

Mettañca sabbalokasmiṃ
mānasaṃ bhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ,
uddhaṃ adho ca tiriyañca,
asambādhaṃ averamasapattaṃ.

With goodwill for the whole world,
cultivate a boundless heart:
above, below, and all around,
unconfined, free of hatred and enmity.

Tiṭṭhaṃ caraṃ nisinno va,
sayāno yāvatāssa vitamiddho,
etaṃ satiṃ adhiṭṭheyya:
brahmametaṃ vihāramidhamāhu.

Standing, walking, or sitting,
or lying down, as long as one is free of drowsiness,
one should resolve on this mindfulness:
this, they say, is a sublime abiding here.

Diṭṭhiñca anupaggamma,
sīlavā dassanena sampanno,
kāmesu vineyya gedhaṃ,
na hi jātuggabbhaseyya punaretīti.

Not taking up views,
virtuous and consummate in vision,
having put away greed for sensual pleasures,
one never comes to lie in a womb again.
