American abbot of Metta Forest Monastery and one of the great translators of our time, who has put close to a thousand suttas into careful English — all offered free.
Ṭhānissaro Bhikkhu was born on 28 December 1949 and ordained on 7 November 1976. For ten years he trained in Thailand under Ajahn Fuang Jotiko, a student of Ajahn Lee.
Since 1993 he has been abbot of Metta Forest Monastery in San Diego County, California, which he co-founded with Ajahn Suwat Suvaco — the first monastery of the Thai forest tradition in the United States.
His translations of the Dhammapada and of close to a thousand suttas, his books, and his evening Dhamma talks are all given away freely at dhammatalks.org, “no price tags, no strings attached”. His writing is rigorous and practical at once: the texts read as instructions for practice.
